Acne: Separating Fact from Fiction

Myths about acne die hard. Old wives tales about its causes continue to persist, in spite of scientific condition to the contrary. This article aims to shed light on some common myths about acne and attempts to separate fact from fiction.
Myth 1:
The People who have acne are unclean and maintain poor hygiene Here again is another statement that is not strictly true. Acne develops as a result of blockages in follicles. This misconception probably comes from the fact that blackheads look like dirt stuck in the openings of pores. The black color is simply not dirt but oxidised keratin. In fact, the blockages of keratin that cause acne occur deep within the narrow follicle channel, where it is impossible to wash them away. These plugs are formed by the failure of the cells lining the duct to separate and flow to the surface in the sebum created there by the body.
Myth 2:
Acne is caused by eating wrong kinds of foods such as fatty foods.
Fact:
Dermatologists say there is no evidence that sugary or fried snacks affects your skin. If you find that you tend to break out more after eating a certain food eliminate that food from your diet and see if your skin clears up. Also keep in mind that healthy skin requires nutrition from a well-balanced diet.
Myth 3:
Acne is usually caused by stress
Fact:
The ordinary stress of day-to-day living is not an important factor in acne. Anti-depression drugs can cause acne as a side effect
Myth 4:
Acne affects girls more often than boys.
Fact:
if anything, it is the reverse that is true. This is because of the prevalence of the hormone androgen in boys, which makes their skin greasier and more susceptible to outbreaks of acne
Myth 5:
You can't wear makeup or shave if you want clear skin.
Fact:
Kids don't have to forego cosmetics as long the products used are labeled noncomedogenic or nonacnegenic, which means they won't cause breakouts. Some concealers now contain benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid, which help to fight acne. Tinted acne-fighting creams may also help to fight pimples while hiding them.
However, if any product seems to be irritating the skin or causing breakouts, have your child stop using the product and call your dermatologist.
